Cassis West Cemetery Port Louis (Mauritius)
The response to the appeal launched for the restoration of our ancestors graves has been a success. This spontaneous acknowledgement towards our forebears has been a great cause uniting the family.
The works are now finished and satisfactorily completed under the able supervision of Pierre Baisssac. The sum collected up to date, which is 202,483 Mauritian Rupees, has covered the full initial cost of 145,000MR which was in fact discounted to 140.000MR. We have therefore a surplus of 62,483MR. This surplus will enable us to embellish the tombs of Toussaint and Laurence by tastefully incorporating the Family Arms engraved on stone, a suggestion made by Jacques de Chazal (Le Cannet France).
These restored graves of Toussaint and Laurence surrounded by four graves of very young children will undoubtedly be a very special place members of The Family will visit.
These graves can easily be found in the West Cemetery (cimetière de l’Ouest). From the Labourdonais statue in Port Louis take the South road towards Curepipe. Take the first left after the bus station and go round the roundabout in the direction of Caudan, just about 100 meters after the roundabout, instead of turning right to Caudan take the road to the left almost facing you. Go straight on and you will come to the cemetery entrance. The graves can be found against the wall opposite the entrance. On foot you follow the straight path following the electricity poles until you get to the wall.
The tombs of Edmond and Pierre-Edmond (together with his son Edgar) are further along in the same cemetery. You can look for them yourself or call VEL, the stonemason who can point you in the right direction. His telephone numbers are 2516902 and 2121270. Be aware that the tomb of Pierre Edmond can be found adjacent to a tree

Christophe Chabbert (France) –
Christophe Chabbert is now preparing a publication, soon to be published by Hammatan, on the correspondence of the de Chazals (in the 18th and 19th Centuries) which will have a full commentary and be liberally annotated. Christophe, wishing to contribute to the restoration of the tombs of our ancestors said “Living with the memories of the de Chazal ancestors has forged, in me, strong links with The Family; I understand that any surplus funds which may be collected will serve to enhance their resting place”
In this old cemetery the tombs of The Family are dispersed in three places:
-Toussaint de Chazal (1770-1822) and by his side his wife Laurence Rivalz de St-Antoine. (Plot numbers 523 – 522).
Every one of us is descended from those held in this, the oldest part of the ancient cemetery. There are two marble plaques at ground level. In the near vicinity are several other graves (mostly of very young children) with the names of Maurice, Benjamin, Alcide and Marie de Chazal.
Toussaint and Laurence made their mark in their time. They form part of our history and heritage. ( See Toussaint in the Family dictionary onwww.chazfest.com )
These graves, dating back two hundred years, have never been tended or repaired. An estimate has been obtained from Mr. Vel Vyavooree, whose telephone numbers are 2516902 and 2121270, to repair these marble plaques; to raise, clean, and reinstate the existing stone. He anticipates creating a low, narrow stone border to surround them all so as to differentiate them from those nearby.
This place could become a place of pilgrimage for all Toussaint’s descendents; from Mauritius, or those settled in other parts of The World.
The cost of this work: approximately 60,000 Rupees or 2500 US$or 1500 Euros.
TOMB OF EDMOND de CHAZAL (1809-1879) – (Sec:22 – 232)
(see Family dictionary). For many of us he is our Great-Great Grandfather either directly or through Lucie, his daughter, who married her first cousin Pierre-Edmond.
This tomb is in relatively good condition. All it needs is the stone brushing down and some re-pointing. The tomb was opened some years ago by robbers looking for lead.
The cost of refurbishment of this tomb: approximately 10,000 Rupees or US$320 or 250 Euros.
TOMB OF PIERRE EDMOND de CHAZAL (1837-1914) and resting place of Edgar de Chazal (1867-1935)
This tomb is in a very poor state and is on the point of falling apart if we do not do something quickly. The roots of a tree growing very close have infiltrated the tomb pushing the stones apart. Some have collapsed, such as the crowning cross. To build a tomb of these dimensions would now cost at least a million rupees.
The cost of refurbishment of this tomb: approximately 75 000 Rupees or US$2400 or 1900 Euros.
TOTAL COST OF REFURBISHMENTS: 145 000 RUPEES or US$4620 or 3600 Euros.
This is a project for which we should all gather together and contribute according to ones means. Each financial donation, even a symbolic gesture, will be important. The work could be started immediately if sufficient funds are raised. In each country one member of the family must coordinate the donations.
Please consider the matter and advise me by return of your thoughts and intentions.
